Today's Safety Sunday Tip is: Ice and Snow…Take it Slow!
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! It's that time of year again, and even though many of us don't experience truly harsh cold weather like some do in certain parts of our country, I wanted to touch base with you on the subject of winter driving.
Whether it's a part of your job or your daily commute, proper winter driving should include a pre-drive inspection of your vehicle to ensure it is working properly. This inspection includes checking the battery, the brakes, cooling system, fuses, engine, wiper blades, exhaust system, tires, oil, and especially visibility. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has several tips for safe winter driving that can help you plan for whatever the road throws your way throughout the season. Here are a few reminders for you, your family members, or coworkers to consider before driving in winter weather:
- Keep a flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, warning devices (like flares), and road triangles (for visibility sake) in your vehicle.
- A small bag of kitty litter or sand can help you drive safely on slippery roads or help you navigate winter ground conditions.
- Always check the weather conditions before your journey and allow for plenty of travel time. Plan your trip!
- Make sure you have some non-perishable food, water, blankets, medication, and a charged cell phone for long trips.
- Dress in layers in case you must get out of your vehicle and are exposed to the elements.
It's important to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. A few items to considered including in this kit are:
- Two-way radio
- Windshield ice scraper
- Snowbrush
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Shovel
- Tow chain
- Traction aids (bag of sand or cat litter)
- Emergency flares
- Jumper cables
- Water
- Road maps
- Blankets, change of clothes
Do not be caught off guard by cold weather hazards. Remember, when there's ice and snow…take it slow!
